Get a SIM card and phone line
Pick a classic or no-commitment operator, gather the documents, and check coverage first.
In the first days after arrival
- Passport or valid ID
- French address proof (for contract lines)
- French IBAN (for the monthly direct debit, not necessarily on day one)
- Previous mobile number if you want to port it
1. Choose the type of line
Compare major operators (Orange, SFR, Bouygues) with wider coverage against budget or no-commitment brands (such as Free), which are cheaper.
2. Check network coverage
Before buying, check each operator's coverage map for your home and university on the operator's site or the ARCEP coverage map.
3. Activate the SIM
Buying in person only needs ID; ordering online or by mail can take a few days for the SIM to arrive.
4. Set up payment
For contract lines, enter your IBAN and check the monthly debit date and whether you can cancel without a penalty.
- Prepaid or no-commitment (sans engagement) lines need the least paperwork and suit the first weeks; check coverage at your home and university before a longer commitment.
