Territoire de Belfort

The Territoire de Belfort is the smallest department in mainland France, located in the east of the country, in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, near the Swiss border, with its capital in Belfort. The department is known for its historic resistance during the Franco-Prussian War (symbolized by the Lion of Belfort) and its automotive industry (the Alstom/General Electric plant). Its economy blends heavy industry, services and heritage tourism. The cost of living in this small department is reasonable, and its proximity to Switzerland and the Mulhouse-Basel area provides cross-border job opportunities.

Belfort

Belfort is a small city with both industrial and residential neighborhoods. The city center and the neighborhoods near the university are generally safe and quiet; some older industrial areas can be a bit rougher, but on the same scale as other medium-sized cities.

Belfort is connected to the high-speed rail network via the Belfort and Belfort-Montbéliard TGV stations. Optymo buses operate in the city and its suburbs.
