Somme
Somme department is located in northern France, in the Hauts-de-France region, on the English Channel coast, and its capital is the city of Amiens, home to a large Gothic cathedral (a UNESCO World Heritage site). The department is known for the floating gardens of Amiens as well as the World War I battlefields (the Battle of the Somme), which left many military memorials. Its economy combines agriculture, food industries, and historical and coastal tourism (the Bay of the Somme). The cost of living in the department is low and calm, and it is about an hour from Paris by train.
Amiens, Abbeville, Albert
- Université de Picardie Jules Verne (UPJV) - The region's main university, with multiple campuses in Somme and the surrounding area.
Amiens is a relatively calm student city; some neighborhoods around the station are busier and more working-class, but the student neighborhoods and city center are well suited for student life. Smaller towns are very calm.
Amiens lies on the rail axis between Lille and Paris, and the TER Hauts-de-France network connects the city to the rest of the region. Urban and regional buses operate throughout the department.
