Jura

The Jura department is in eastern France, in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, along the Jura mountains and the Swiss border, and its capital is the small town of Lons-le-Saunier. This department is known for its lush mountains, numerous lakes and waterfalls, as well as distinctive local wines (Vin Jaune). Its economy combines mountain agriculture, small industries (plastics, toys in the Oyonnax area) and nature-based tourism. Jura is a sparsely populated department with a low cost of living and beautiful four-season mountain scenery, well suited to those interested in nature exploration and Nordic skiing.

Lons-le-Saunier, Dole, Saint-Claude

Jura's towns (such as Lons-le-Saunier and Dole) are generally calm and quiet in terms of safety; the usual issues of big cities (such as severe urban delinquency) are seen at much lower levels. It's a good option for a calm family life, but for those used to nightlife and high cultural diversity, it might seem a bit quiet.

Public transport in Lons-le-Saunier and Dole is mostly based on local buses. For intercity travel, TER trains run from Lons-le-Saunier station to Dijon, Besançon and other cities. Compared to larger regions, the transport network is more limited, so having a bicycle or a car can be useful.
