Hautes-Alpes
The Hautes-Alpes department is located in southeastern France, at the heart of the French Alps and on the border with Italy, and its center is the city of Gap. This is the most mountainous department in France, with the Écrins National Park, one of the country's largest national parks, covering much of its area. The local economy depends heavily on winter tourism (skiing) and summer tourism (hiking and mountain biking). Life in the department is calm and sparsely populated, and costs are reasonable, especially outside the tourist season, but access to major cities is limited and distances are long.
