Cantal
The Cantal department is located in central France, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, and its center is the small town of Aurillac. It lies in the heart of the extinct volcanic mountains of Auvergne and contains the highest volcanic peaks in Europe (Plomb du Cantal). Its economy relies mainly on mountain livestock farming and cheese production (Cantal, Salers), with no major industry present. Cantal is one of the least populated departments in France, with a very low cost of living and lush mountain scenery, but it is known for its cold winters and limited transport access.
