Bas Rhin
Bas-Rhin department is located at the easternmost point of France, in the Grand Est region, on the border with Germany, and its capital is Strasbourg, seat of the European Parliament and the Council of Europe and one of the symbols of European unity. The department is known for its colorful Alsatian architecture, the wine villages of the Alsace Wine Route, and its famous Christmas markets. Its economy combines European institutions, technology, banking and industry. As a bilingual city (French-German) with a high quality of life, moderate cost of living and multicultural atmosphere, Strasbourg is a popular destination for international students and professionals.

Strasbourg is a large, touristy city; the historic center (Grande Île) and student neighborhoods are lively and busy, and as in any big city you should watch out for pickpocketing and crowds near the station. Residential neighborhoods and suburbs are generally calmer. Smaller towns like Haguenau and Sélestat have a much more family-friendly and safer atmosphere.
Strasbourg has one of the best public transport networks in France: trams, buses, a tram-train line to Germany, bike-share, and TER regional trains connecting the city to Colmar, Mulhouse, Germany and Switzerland.
